Puffed Grain Cereal

Puffing grains is a technique that goes back for centuries. It’s most commonly seen today in rice cakes, puffed grain cereals and popcorn. Nearly any grain can be used with this application. Modern puffed grains are often created using high temperature, pressure or extrusion. People eat puffed grains in many ways and more common grains like rice, wheat and corn are puffed to make cereals, but it can be as simple as puffed grain alone and with sugar or salt for taste.

Wholegrain cereals are recommended as part of a healthy diet. Benefits of Whole Grains:

  • Naturally low in saturated fat and  contain good polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  • Are a rich source of many essential vitamins, minerals, protein, cholesterol-free, high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals.
  • People with diabetes also benefit from eating wholegrain cereals which have been linked to improvements in insulin sensitivity.
  • Help protect against heart disease. Studies have shown that a high intake of wholegrains protected against the effects of cardiovascular disease. Regularly eating cereals that are rich in soluble fiber has been found to significantly reduce the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
  • Can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 per cent. People with diabetes also benefit from eating wholegrain cereals, which have been linked to improvements in insulin sensitivity.
  • Can be an effective part of any weight loss program. High fiber foods take longer to digest and create a feeling of fullness, which discourages overeating. Wholegrains are also naturally low in saturated fat and contain good polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  • Increase movement of food through the digestive tract. A high-fiber diet has been associated with decreased risk of developing colon cancer and diverticular disease.
